Thane is set to make history as the city will soon host India’s first multimodal integrated transport station with the operational launch of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project. 📌 Thane’s Mega Transport Hub

According to officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the upcoming Thane station will serve as a one-stop interconnected transport hub, integrating:

  • Bullet train services

  • City buses & long-distance buses

  • Waterways with jetties

  • Cab & auto-rickshaw stands

  • Seamless road connectivity to airports

Over 25% of the station area will be developed as green zones, ensuring eco-friendly infrastructure and open spaces for citizens.

🌏 Insights from Japan & Global Partnerships

The announcement was made during an international conference held on Friday, where representatives from the Centre, Maharashtra and Gujarat governments, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and local bodies discussed the development blueprint.

JICA shared its expertise on how bullet train stations in Japan transformed urban landscapes, becoming the backbone of transit-oriented development. Thane and Virar stations are being designed with similar models in mind.

🚆 Bullet Train Corridor in Maharashtra

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor will feature 12 stations in total, with four key stations in Maharashtra:

  • Mumbai (BKC)

  • Thane

  • Virar

  • Boisar

Comprehensive development plans for these stations are being jointly prepared by municipal bodies, the state urban development department, and JICA.
