Maharashtra Adopts Multi-Member Ward System for Civic Polls
In a major shift from the traditional electoral format, voters across municipal corporations in Maharashtra—excluding Mumbai—will vote under a three-member or four-member ward system in the upcoming civic elections scheduled for January 15.
Under this new system:
-
Each ward will elect three or four corporators
-
Voters will be required to cast multiple votes in a single visit to the polling booth
-
This replaces the earlier one-ward-one-corporator model
The counting of votes will take place on January 16.
This change is expected to significantly impact local political dynamics, including in Thane, as voters adapt to the new multi-vote format during the municipal elections.
