Thane’s Collector, Dr. Shrikrishnanath Panchal, has set a strict 15-day deadline for agencies to complete repairs on the heavily damaged Ghodbunder Highway—one of the district’s busiest and most congested routes. The move follows sharp criticism from Deputy Chief Minister and Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde regarding the worsening condition of main roads in the region and the resulting severe traffic jams that have significantly affected daily travel.

During a late evening inspection at the Gaimukh Ghat section of Ghodbunder Highway, Dr. Panchal instructed all concerned bodies to take immediate action to address the issue and alleviate traffic congestion. In the wake of his visit, a high-level meeting convened, bringing together the Regional Transport Department, Mira-Bhayandar and Thane Traffic Police, and other municipal divisions, with a focus on producing a comprehensive repair and traffic management plan.
Key details of the action plan include:
-
Partial closure of the Ghat section of Ghodbunder Highway starting Friday, allowing phased repair work.
-
Strict completion timeline of 15 days, despite challenges posed by the ongoing monsoon, heavy vehicular flow, and adherence to stringent road safety standards.
-
Formation of an inter-agency coordination team with representatives from the Mira-Bhayandar and Thane Municipal Corporations, Public Works Department, and Traffic Police, ensuring effective execution and minimizing disruption for commuters.
Officials have emphasised that these urgent measures are necessary to address persistent complaints and improve overall road safety and movement. Dedicated communication strategies will be implemented to keep motorists informed and minimize inconvenience throughout the repair period.
Motorists using the Ghodbunder stretch are advised to plan journeys accordingly and stay tuned for updates from civic and traffic authorities.
