The political landscape in Thane is set for a crucial test as the Shiv Sena, split into two factions since 2022, prepares for elections. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) faces a formidable challenge to reclaim its stronghold in a city with deep ties to the Thackeray family since the party’s inception in 1967. Historically, Thane’s support for the Sena began under the leadership of Bal Thackeray and thrived with Anand Dighe, who established a strong local network and sidelined the Congress.
However, Eknath Shinde’s rise reshaped the party’s control. Following Dighe’s death in 2001, Shinde consolidated power in Thane, ensuring loyalty from most local leaders. When he split from Uddhav’s faction in 2022, the majority followed him, leaving Uddhav’s Sena struggling for leadership and strategy.
In the current battle, Uddhav’s faction fields candidates like Rajan Vichare (Thane City) and Kedar Dighe (Kopri-Pachpakhadi), challenging Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BJP’s Sanjay Kelkar. The Owala-Majiwada seat sees incumbent Pratap Sarnaik (Shinde camp) against UBT’s Naresh Manera.
Thane’s demographics have evolved with urban growth and a more diverse, non-Marathi population, aiding the BJP’s rise. The city’s shifting landscape and the influence of new voters make this election pivotal for both factions and could redefine the city’s political allegiance.
