The long-awaited Thane Metro is finally on track for its first trial run in September 2025, with full-fledged operations expected to begin by December this year. The update was shared by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during his visit to the city on Sunday.
Shinde said that the project will significantly improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), making travel faster and easier for lakhs of daily commuters. “Efforts are on to conduct the trial run in September. After that, we are working to launch actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war footing,” he said.
Integrated Metro Network for Thane
The Deputy CM confirmed that preliminary work on Thane’s internal Metro network has already begun. Once completed, it will be linked to the main Metro corridors to provide smooth, end-to-end travel options and better last-mile connectivity within the city.
Tackling Traffic Congestion
Shinde also highlighted parallel efforts to reduce traffic congestion in Thane, with clear directives given to the District Collector, Municipal Commissioner, and Police Commissioner. “We are working towards making Thane free from traffic jams,” he assured.
Why It Matters for Thane Residents
With the launch of the Metro, Thane commuters can expect:
- Reduced travel time to Mumbai and other MMR areas
- Fewer road traffic bottlenecks
- Improved public transport options
- Easier last-mile connectivity
The Thane Metro is part of the state’s broader infrastructure push, aiming to transform the city into a better-connected, commuter-friendly urban hub.
