In a heartwarming initiative that shines a light on the talents and resilience of Thane’s incarcerated community, the “Diwali Mela” exhibition, a week-long event, opened on Tuesday right outside the Thane Central Jail. The exhibition is a showcase of a variety of handmade products, meticulously crafted by inmates, that embody skill, creativity, and a spirit of rehabilitation. The District Information Office, which announced the opening, noted that these products range from traditional Diwali items to everyday essentials.
Among the array of items on display, Diwali essentials such as earthen lamps and sky lanterns catch the eye, adding a festive spirit to the exhibition. These intricate, handcrafted items are joined by larger works, including furniture pieces, as well as textiles like jackets and cotton towels. A highlight for many visitors has been the selection of bakery goods, with the inmates’ baked oats biscuits receiving particular appreciation.
This initiative provides a platform for the inmates to learn new skills and develop self-reliance, with support from voluntary organizations offering training in these crafts. By channeling their energy into productive tasks, inmates contribute to a cause that fosters personal growth and a sense of accomplishment. The earnings generated from this sale will go toward supporting the inmates’ rehabilitation and skill-building.
The Diwali Mela exhibition was inaugurated by Thane Collector Ashok Shingare, with Thane Central Jail Superintendent Rani Bhosle also in attendance, lending their support to this empowering endeavor.
